Can someone help me understand shamanism?

I need to know about shamanism for a school essay in World History, specifically the shamanism practiced by the Mongolians. Is it true that shamanism is centered around gods of nature? Is it true that mongolian shamans offered human sacrifices to these gods? If you know anything else about the nature of the religion, I'm all ears. Thank you so much!
